The Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant, situated in Huizhou City of Guangdong Province, has marked a significant milestone with the completion of the outer dome of Unit 1. This impressive structure boasts a radius of 36 meters and stands approximately 11 meters tall, equivalent to the size of five basketball courts.
Set to become operational in 2025, Unit 1 is the first Hualong-1 nuclear power unit in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It is projected to generate 10 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, powering the needs of 1 million residents.
The Taipingling facility is planned to house six 1-million-kilowatt Hualong-1 third-generation nuclear power units. While Unit 1 is currently undergoing critical installation and commissioning phases, Unit 2 is approaching the peak period of equipment installation. Both units are expected to be operational by 2025.
Upon completion, the plant will achieve an annual electricity generation surpassing 50 billion kilowatt-hours. This achievement is anticipated to reduce standard coal consumption by over 15 million tonnes and lower carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 41.2 million tonnes. Zhang Guoqiang from China General Nuclear Power Group, overseeing the Taipingling project, highlighted that the environmental benefits are akin to planting nearly 113,000 hectares of forest.
