The Chinese delegation is set to make significant strides at the upcoming 77th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, emphasizing deeper collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and member nations. Scheduled to commence on Monday, the WHA brings together representatives from 194 member states to shape global health policies under this year’s theme: All for Health, Health for All.
Leading the Chinese delegation is Cao Xuetao, deputy director of China’s National Health Commission (NHC). In a recent media briefing, Cao underscored China’s proactive role in international health efforts and regional partnerships. \"China is committed to strengthening exchanges and cooperation in the health sector with the WHO and various countries, continuously promoting the construction of a global community of health for all,\" he stated.
Commitment to Global Health
China has long been dedicated to fostering a global health community. Cao highlighted the nation’s active participation in international organizations and regional health collaborations, where it shares valuable experiences and expertise. Following the COVID-19 outbreak, China demonstrated its commitment by promptly reporting epidemic information nearly 3,000 times to the international community, including the WHO, relevant countries, and regional organizations.
Furthermore, China shared numerous technical documents on epidemic prevention, control, and treatment plans with over 160 countries and more than 10 international and regional organizations. The nation also conducted nearly 300 expert discussions or remote meetings, dispatched 38 anti-epidemic expert teams to 34 countries affected by the pandemic, and guided Chinese medical teams stationed in over 50 countries to assist in their host nations' epidemic prevention and control efforts.
Prioritizing Public Health
During the press briefing, NHC spokesperson Mi Feng highlighted China's strategic focus on public health and the active pursuit of universal health coverage. Supported by the world's largest healthcare service and medical security systems, China participates robustly in global health governance and sends medical teams to developing countries, taking concrete actions to promote universal health.
The Healthy China Initiative aims to enhance public health through innovative policies by 2030, advancing efforts toward achieving universal health coverage. At the WHA, the Chinese delegation plans to engage in technical discussions and consultations, bringing their expertise to two crucial international documents: the \"Pandemic Agreement\" to improve global responses to future pandemics, and the revision of the International Health Regulations (2005), which seeks to strengthen global health security through updated cooperation protocols.
With these initiatives, China continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of global health, ensuring that health for all remains a central priority on the international agenda.
