China has taken a significant leap in sustainable energy with the activation of the Linglong One, the world's first commercial small modular reactor (SMR). Located in Changjiang County, Hainan Province, this milestone marks the beginning of the peak system equipment installation phase for the reactor.
Dubbed the central nervous system of the plant, the main control room operates much like the human brain, coordinating the digital control network as it comes online. Staff are actively testing equipment, monitoring operations, and issuing commands from this pivotal hub.
Zhao Long, deputy director of engineering management at China National Nuclear Corporation's (CNNC) Hainan branch, shared with China Media Group (CMG) that \"Compared with other nuclear power units, the Linglong One's main control room equipment is more integrated and streamlined, and its safety of various operations has been greatly upgraded.\"
The Linglong One is the first SMR globally to pass the International Atomic Energy Agency's universal safety review. Construction is projected to be completed by 2026. This multi-purpose small modular pressurized water reactor, independently developed by CNNC, boasts a power generation capacity of 125 megawatts. Upon completion, it is expected to generate 1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, sufficient to meet the needs of 526,000 households.
Beyond its energy production capabilities, the Linglong One is a beacon of environmental sustainability. Its operations are equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 880,000 tonnes or planting 7.5 million trees, according to CNNC. This advancement underscores China's commitment to innovative and eco-friendly energy solutions.
