China's exports of electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and solar panels, collectively known as the \"new three\" products, have surged past 1 trillion yuan ($140 billion), marking a year-on-year increase of nearly 30 percent. To accommodate the growing demand for faster and more reliable transportation of these goods to Europe, China is leveraging the expansive \"China Railway Express\" (CR Express) network.
CGTN recently visited Xi'an, a pivotal hub on the CR Express network, to delve into this innovative logistics solution. Unlike traditional freight methods, Xi'an's trains bypass seaports entirely, delivering goods directly to European destinations. This efficiency has positioned Xi'an as a leader in international cargo transportation, boasting an impressive annual capacity of over 66 million tonnes.
The CR Express offers a compelling alternative to both air and sea cargo. While air freight remains significantly more expensive, sea shipping is considerably slower. The trains are versatile, transporting a diverse range of goods, with electric vehicles standing out as a particularly strong export category.
Ma Li, head of port management at the Xi'an International Trade and Logistics Park, emphasized the immense potential of electric vehicles in European markets. \"The increase in our auto exports in recent years is largely driven by new energy vehicles,\" Ma explained. \"From an economic standpoint, consumers should welcome our new energy vehicles. This market has great potential.\"
The impact of the CR Express extends beyond economic gains. The surge in trade volume has fostered deeper international collaboration. Ma highlighted the presence of over a dozen employees from Kazakhstan who have relocated to Xi'an to work at the terminal, with their children attending local schools. This signifies a growing human connection alongside strengthening economic ties.
The critical role of the CR Express was further highlighted by the Red Sea crisis starting in November 2023, which disrupted major global shipping lanes. As traditional shipping routes became unreliable, the CR Express ensured the continuity of seamless cross-border logistics.
Currently, the CR Express network connects over 200 cities across 25 European countries, with more than a thousand trains operating monthly. This land route has become an essential platform for trade and exchange between Asia and Europe. Ma concluded by expressing his confidence that Xi'an is well-positioned to serve as a hub for further international cooperation and exchange along the Belt and Road Initiative.
