The Chinese mainland and the United States convened for the first inter-governmental dialogue on artificial intelligence (AI) in Geneva on Tuesday.
During the meeting, both parties engaged in an in-depth and constructive exchange of views regarding the risks associated with AI, global governance frameworks, and other relevant concerns.
The discussions focused on identifying governance measures and exploring ways to promote the development of AI from a socioeconomic perspective. The Chinese mainland highlighted AI as one of today’s most significant emerging technologies, emphasizing a people-first approach to ensure that AI advancements are beneficial, safe, and fair.
Supporting the strengthening of global AI governance, the Chinese mainland advocated for the United Nations to serve as the primary channel for international collaboration. They expressed readiness to enhance communication and coordination with the global community, including the U.S., to establish a comprehensive global framework and consensus-based standards for AI governance.
The Chinese mainland also articulated its firm stance on the U.S. restrictions and repression in the AI sector, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts to address these challenges.
Both parties acknowledged the dual nature of AI development, recognizing the opportunities it presents alongside potential risks. They reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the important consensus reached by the two leaders in San Francisco, aiming to foster a balanced and cooperative approach to AI advancement.
