In 2023, China witnessed a significant increase in its healthcare sector, with the number of registered nurses soaring to 5.63 million. This milestone marks a rise of approximately 430,000 nurses compared to the previous year, according to the National Health Commission.
The ratio of nurses to the population also improved, reaching four nurses per 1,000 people. This growth underscores China's commitment to enhancing its healthcare system.
Education among nurses has seen remarkable progress. By the end of 2023, over 80% of nurses held a college degree or higher, up from 70% in 2020. This increase in educational attainment ensures a more skilled and knowledgeable nursing workforce.
Addressing shortages in critical areas, various regions across China have expanded training programs for specialties such as geriatrics, pediatrics, intensive care, and infectious diseases. Officials emphasized that ongoing policies and regulations will continue to support and strengthen nursing services nationwide.
