Apple is taking significant strides in the artificial intelligence (AI) realm by developing its own AI chips designed specifically for data centers, as reported by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
According to sources familiar with the matter, the project, codenamed Project ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center), aims to leverage the company's chip design expertise to bolster its server infrastructure. This initiative comes as Apple seeks to bridge the gap with competitors in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
CEO Tim Cook expressed optimism about Apple's prospects in generative AI, stating, \\"We continue to feel very bullish about our opportunity in generative AI and we're making significant investments.\\"
Project ACDC has been under development for several years, although details about its potential launch remain undisclosed. The focus of Apple's server chip is expected to be on running AI models, known as inference, rather than training them.
In collaboration with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, Apple is working to design and initiate production of these specialized chips. While the partnership with TSMC marks a critical step in the project's advancement, it is still unclear whether the two companies have finalized their collaborative efforts.
