China is making significant strides in its energy sector with the Shenhai-1, also known as Deep Sea No.1, marking a record-breaking achievement. As the country’s first independently developed ultra-deepwater gas field, Shenhai-1 has amassed over 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas and surpassed 800,000 cubic meters of oil since it began operations on June 25, 2021.
Operated by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation, Shenhai-1 stands as the deepest gas field in China, located 150 kilometers from Sanya in Hainan. This impressive infrastructure operates at ocean depths exceeding 1,500 meters, showcasing China’s advanced capabilities in deepwater exploration and production.
The project is gearing up for its next phase, with the construction of Phase II currently underway. This upgrade aims to enhance the gas field’s capacity by managing 23 deep-water gas wells and integrating two state-of-the-art underwater production systems. Upon completion, Deep Sea No.1 will significantly boost China’s energy output and support the nation’s growing demand for natural resources.
Shenhai-1 not only highlights China’s commitment to expanding its energy portfolio but also underscores the technological innovations driving the country’s emergence as a leader in the global energy market. As Shenhai-1 continues to perform, it sets a benchmark for future deepwater projects, contributing to sustainable development and economic growth.
