China's third aircraft carrier, the Fujian (hull number 18), set sail from the Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard at approximately 8 a.m. on Wednesday, embarking on its inaugural sea trials.
The primary focus of these trials will be to evaluate the reliability and stability of the ship’s propulsion and electrical systems, critical components for the carrier’s operational effectiveness.
Since its launch in June 2022, the Fujian has undergone a series of rigorous tests, including mooring trials, outfitting work, and equipment adjustments. The carrier has successfully met all technical requirements, paving the way for its current phase of sea trials.
Named after Fujian Province on China's southeastern coast, the carrier continues the tradition of naming the nation’s aircraft carriers after provinces, following the Liaoning and Shandong.
With a full-load displacement exceeding 80,000 tonnes, the Fujian represents China's first domestically produced carrier equipped with modern catapult systems. The inclusion of electromagnetic catapults and arresting devices highlights a significant advancement in the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s modernization efforts.
