China Unveils Vidu: Pioneering Text-to-Video AI at Tsinghua’s New AI School

In a significant leap for artificial intelligence, China has introduced Vidu, a state-of-the-art text-to-video large AI model. The unveiling took place on Saturday at the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum in Beijing, showcasing Vidu's ability to create a 16-second, high-definition video in 1080p resolution with just a single click.

Developed collaboratively by Tsinghua University and ShengShu Technology, Vidu marks China's first large AI model in the text-to-video domain. According to Zhu Jun, deputy director of the Tsinghua Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Vidu excels in extended duration, exceptional consistency, and dynamic capabilities, making it a versatile tool for various creative and industrial applications. The model is particularly adept at understanding and generating Chinese content, including culturally significant symbols like pandas and the Chinese dragon.

On the same day, Tsinghua University also announced the establishment of the School of Artificial Intelligence. This new institution is dedicated to advancing the core fundamental theories and architectures of AI while fostering \"AI + X\" compound talent. Led by Turing Award winner and Chinese Academy of Sciences member Andrew Chi-Chih Yao as its first dean, the school aims to cultivate top-tier AI talent and drive original innovation through innovative talent recruitment mechanisms and interdisciplinary training programs.

The School of Artificial Intelligence is poised to become a cornerstone for China’s AI development, focusing on achieving high-level technological self-reliance and supporting breakthroughs in basic research and key core technologies. Additionally, the school plans to enhance international exchanges and collaborations, leveraging Tsinghua University’s comprehensive disciplinary strengths and Beijing’s industrial ecosystem to establish a global hub for AI talent and innovation.

With the introduction of Vidu and the establishment of the School of Artificial Intelligence, China is set to reinforce its position as a leader in the global AI landscape, driving advancements that will impact various industries and foster sustainable technological growth worldwide.
