China's sci-fi industry witnessed remarkable growth in 2023, generating a total revenue of 113.29 billion yuan (about $16 billion), marking a 29.1% year-on-year increase. This milestone signifies the industry's first time surpassing the 100-billion-yuan revenue mark.
The 2024 China Science Fiction Industry Report, unveiled at the 8th China Science Fiction Convention in Beijing, detailed the sector's diverse contributions. Sci-fi reading earned 3.17 billion yuan, up 4.3%, while sci-fi films and television works amassed 11.59 billion yuan, a 38.8% increase. The surge in sci-fi web series, mini-series, and short to medium-length videos contributed significantly to this growth.
Leading the revenue streams, sci-fi games generated 65.19 billion yuan, a 15.4% rise from the previous year. Additionally, sci-fi cultural tourism surged by 106.7%, reaching 31.06 billion yuan. These figures highlight the expanding influence and economic impact of science fiction in China.
