Shanxi Province, renowned for its rich coal reserves, has ramped up its coalbed methane production significantly. In the first quarter of 2024, Shanxi extracted 3.07 billion cubic meters of coalbed methane, marking an 11.8% increase compared to the same period last year. This impressive output accounts for approximately 80.8% of China's total coalbed methane production, as reported by the provincial energy bureau.
Kang Yi, an official from the energy bureau, highlighted the province's substantial progress in expanding both the reserves and production capabilities of coalbed methane. He noted that the annual output in 2023 surged by a staggering 249% since 2015, underscoring Shanxi's pivotal role in China's energy landscape.
Coalbed methane, a byproduct of coal mining, offers multiple benefits. Its utilization not only mitigates the risks associated with mining operations but also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, increasing coalbed methane production helps alleviate gas shortages, providing a cleaner energy alternative.
Shanxi stands out among Chinese regions for its abundant coalbed methane resources, housing about a third of the nation's estimated reserves. This strategic emphasis on coalbed methane aligns with global trends towards sustainable energy solutions and positions Shanxi as a key player in China's energy transition.
