China’s Health Literacy Climbs to 29.7% in 2023: Progress and Insights

Health literacy in the Chinese mainland has seen a steady rise, reaching 29.7% in 2023, marking an increase of 1.92 percentage points from the previous year, according to the National Health Commission (NHC).

The NHC's latest survey highlights a significant gap between urban and rural areas, with urban residents boasting a health literacy rate of 33.25%, up by 1.31 percentage points, while rural areas saw a more substantial increase of 2.45 percentage points, reaching 26.23%.

Health literacy serves as a critical indicator of economic and social development, reflecting the overall health levels of the population. Higher health literacy empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health, leading to better health outcomes and more effective disease prevention.

The NHC's assessment encompasses various aspects of health awareness, including safety and first-aid knowledge, access to medical care, and the prevention and control of chronic and infectious diseases. By continuously monitoring and improving health literacy, the Chinese mainland aims to foster a healthier, more informed society.
