Tesla Launches Mega Energy Storage Factory in Shanghai

U.S. carmaker Tesla is set to break ground this May on its ambitious new mega factory project in Shanghai. Located in the Lingang new area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, this state-of-the-art facility is designed to produce 10,000 Megapacks annually, equating to nearly 40 gigawatt hours of energy storage.

This marks Tesla's first energy storage mega factory project outside the U.S. market, with mass production expected to commence in the first quarter of 2025. The Megapack, known for its robust energy storage capabilities, plays a crucial role in stabilizing the grid and preventing outages, as detailed on Tesla's website.

The Shanghai mega factory is a significant addition to Tesla's expanding investments in the Lingang area. Over the past few years, Tesla has not only ramped up the production capacity of its Gigafactory Shanghai but also developed additional facilities, including a supercharger manufacturing plant. These efforts highlight Tesla's commitment to strengthening its presence in the region.

The journey began in January 2019 when Tesla broke ground with its Gigafactory Shanghai, becoming the first wholly foreign-owned car plant to benefit from policies that allow foreign carmakers to establish wholly-owned subsidiaries in the Chinese mainland. Demonstrating remarkable efficiency, the plant delivered its first batch of made-in-China vehicles within a year.

Last December, Tesla officially launched the new mega factory project, describing it as a \"milestone project\". This new facility is poised to further Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy by enhancing energy storage solutions globally.
