In a significant boost to international travel, Chinese and Lao railway authorities have launched an additional pair of trains on the China-Laos Railway, enhancing passenger services across the region.
The China-Laos Railway, a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative, began operations in December 2021, connecting China's Kunming with Vientiane in Laos over a 1,035-km stretch.
The newly introduced trains will operate between Xishuangbanna in China and Luang Prabang in Laos, two of the region's most popular tourist destinations, according to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd.
Initially, the additional services will run four days a week—Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—making the journey between the two cities in approximately five hours with stops at six stations. This schedule allows passengers to complete a round trip within a single day.
Saturday marked the first anniversary of the China-Laos Railway's international passenger service. Over the past year, the service has transported 180,000 passengers from 87 countries and regions, highlighting the railway’s role in fostering cross-border connectivity and tourism.
The expansion of the China-Laos Railway's passenger services reflects the growing demand for efficient and reliable international travel options, further solidifying the railway's importance in the region's transportation network.
