Revolutionizing Energy: The Chinese Mainland’s Linglong One SMR Installs Cutting-Edge Digital Control

The Chinese mainland's first land-based commercial small modular reactor (SMR), known as Linglong One, has commenced the installation of its advanced digital control system (DCS) in Hainan, marking a significant milestone in nuclear innovation.

Developed by the China National Nuclear Corporation, Linglong One is a multi-purpose, small modular pressurized water reactor. Unlike its larger counterpart, Hualong One, the 125 MW Linglong One is designed to support urban heating, urban cooling, industrial steam production, and seawater desalination, catering to the diverse energy needs of modern cities.

The DCS serves as the \"nerve center\" of the nuclear power plant's operations. Linglong One's DCS utilizes two domestically-developed platforms, ensuring enhanced control and efficiency. Deng Xiaoliang, deputy general manager of Hainan Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., emphasized the significance of this development, highlighting it as a testament to the Chinese mainland's commitment to independent innovation.

Linglong One follows the legacy of Hualong One, a homegrown third-generation nuclear reactor, further solidifying China's position in the global nuclear energy landscape. Approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2016, Linglong One was the world's first SMR of its kind and embarked on construction in Hainan in 2021.

With the installation of its cutting-edge digital control system, Linglong One is poised to deliver reliable and sustainable energy solutions, contributing to the region's economic growth and environmental sustainability.
