In a significant leap towards sustainable shipping, the Chinese mainland's Port of Shanghai successfully completed its first methanol ship-to-ship bunkering operation on Wednesday.
The Haigang Zhiyuan, the nation's first operational methanol fuel bunkering vessel, delivered 504 tonnes of eco-friendly methanol to the Astrid Maersk, a large methanol-powered container ship, at Yangshan Port, part of Shanghai Port.
This pioneering operation not only marks the Chinese mainland's inaugural methanol bunkering for a major container vessel but also establishes Shanghai Port as the primary hub equipped with simultaneous ship-to-ship methanol bunkering capabilities.
Measuring 139.98 meters in length, 11.2 meters in depth, and 20.2 meters in width, the methanol bunkering ship stands as the largest of its kind globally and the first to operate in the Chinese mainland.
Beyond its primary function, the vessel enhances port efficiency by enabling refueling operations for other ships while they load and unload containers, optimizing turnaround times and supporting the port's eco-friendly initiatives.
