In a move to enhance transparency and combat the spread of deepfakes, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced that it will begin labeling AI-generated content starting in May.
The tech giant plans to apply \"Made with AI\" labels to AI-generated videos, images, and audio across its platforms. This initiative expands Meta's existing policy, which previously targeted only a limited range of doctored videos, according to Monika Bickert, Vice President of Content Policy.
Additionally, Meta will introduce separate, more prominent labels for digitally altered media that pose a \"particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance,\" regardless of whether the content was created using AI or other tools.
Instead of removing manipulated content, Meta will keep it available while providing viewers with information about its creation. This shift aims to balance the availability of content with the need for transparency.
Earlier, Meta had revealed a plan to detect AI-generated images using invisible markers embedded in the files but had not specified a launch date. The new labeling strategy will be implemented across Meta's Facebook, Instagram, and Threads platforms immediately, while other services like WhatsApp and Quest virtual reality headsets will follow different guidelines.
Meta's spokesperson confirmed that the more prominent \"high-risk\" labels would be applied right away, signaling the company's commitment to addressing misinformation and enhancing user trust.
