The Chinese mainland is making a colossal investment in science and research. In 2023, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) poured over $4.40 billion into more than 52,000 research programs. At a recent committee meeting, Dou Xiankang, head of the NSFC, outlined the foundation's ambitious plans for 2024. Additional efforts will include enhancing the talent funding system, strengthening the management of applied basic research funding, and establishing an international research funding department.
