The Chinese mainland is making a colossal investment in science and research. In 2023, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) poured over $4.40 billion into more than 52,000 research programs. This significant funding underscores the Chinese mainland's commitment to advancing basic research and pushing the boundaries of frontier exploration.
At a recent committee meeting, Dou Xiankang, head of the NSFC, outlined the foundation's ambitious plans for 2024. The focus will be on fostering originality and unrestricted exploration, ensuring that innovative ideas have the freedom to thrive. Additional efforts will include enhancing the talent funding system, strengthening the management of applied basic research funding, and establishing an international research funding department.
Dou emphasized that the NSFC aims to allocate scientific and technological resources towards the most innovative and dynamic frontline researchers, ensuring that the foundation's investments have the maximum impact on advancing global knowledge and technological progress.
