China Energy Unveils Highest-Altitude Hydropower Station in Yellow River Basin

China Energy Investment Corp, also known as China Energy, has officially launched the first unit of the Maerdang Hydropower Station on the upper reaches of the Yellow River. This milestone marks the highest-altitude hydropower facility in the Yellow River basin, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable energy.

Situated at an impressive altitude of 5,000 meters above sea level in Qinghai Province, northwest China, the Maerdang Hydropower Station’s initial unit boasts an installed capacity of 550,000 kilowatts. Experts anticipate that it will generate 13.2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green electricity daily, meeting the energy needs of approximately 1.1 million families.

Upon reaching full operational capacity, the station will offer a total installed capacity of 2.32 million kilowatts. This expansion is expected to produce an average of over 7.3 billion kWh of electricity annually, effectively offsetting 2.56 million tonnes of standard coal consumption and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 8.16 million tonnes.

The Maerdang project represents China Energy’s first integrated clean energy facility, combining hydropower, solar power, and energy storage solutions. By harnessing the abundant clean energy resources of western China, the initiative aims to supply reliable and sustainable power to the energy-demanding eastern regions, fostering a greener and more connected energy landscape.
