Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Under Scrutiny After Supplement Linked to Deaths

In a developing story, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical's Osaka factory is under investigation following reports linking its beni-koji supplement to serious health issues. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, alongside Osaka government officials, initiated the probe on Saturday after over 100 individuals were hospitalized and five fatalities were reported.

Beni-koji, marketed for its cholesterol-lowering benefits, contains Monascus purpureus, a red mold also used as a food coloring agent. The investigation aims to determine if the supplement's raw materials contributed to the kidney diseases observed in affected consumers.

Footage circulating online shows ministry officials inspecting the factory premises. A representative from Kobayashi Pharmaceutical mentioned that the ministry might extend their search to other related sites, although the company has yet to release detailed comments.

Following the alarming reports, Kobayashi initiated a recall of its beni-koji products. Additionally, the Chinese Consumer Association has advised customers to cease using the affected supplements due to potential health risks.

As the investigation continues, stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation to understand the full impact on consumers and the company's operations.
