Chinese Enterprises Achieve Over 50% Industrialization Rate for Invention Patents

In a significant milestone, the industrialization rate of invention patents held by enterprises in the Chinese mainland has surpassed the 50 percent mark for the first time, according to the latest report from the China National Intellectual Property Administration.

In 2023, the industrialization rate reached 51.3 percent, marking a 3.2 percentage point increase from the previous year. This upward trend has been consistent for five consecutive years, highlighting the robust growth in patent commercialization within the region.

Ge Shu, a senior official at the administration, emphasized that high-tech enterprises have also seen a notable rise in patent industrialization. State-level high-tech enterprises reported an industrialization rate of 57.6 percent in 2023, up by 1.5 percentage points year-over-year.

Enterprises in the Chinese mainland continue to play a pivotal role in driving scientific and technological innovation, contributing to over 70 percent of the country's effective invention patents. The total number of patents held by these enterprises now exceeds three million, underscoring their dominance in patent output and commercialization.

Despite these achievements, Ge acknowledged that small and medium-sized enterprises still face challenges in transforming patents into marketable products. In response, the Chinese government has recently introduced a plan to enhance support measures aimed at facilitating the industrialization of patents among these smaller enterprises.

This strategic focus on increasing patent industrialization is expected to further strengthen the innovation ecosystem in the Chinese mainland, fostering greater technological advancements and economic growth.
