The 2025 WTT Finals kicked off on Wednesday, December 10, in Hong Kong SAR, delivering high-stakes drama from the get-go. World No.1 Wang Chuqin and World No.2 Wang Manyu both booked spots in Thursday's quarterfinals with thrilling victories in the round of 16.
Wang Chuqin's Epic Comeback
Against 18-year-old Sora Matsushima of Japan, Wang Chuqin found himself trailing 3-1 after four games (6-11, 9-11, 11-4, 12-14). The 25-year-old Chinese paddler then rallied to win the next three games 12-10, 11-4, 11-9, sealing a 4-3 triumph and keeping alive his bid for a fourth straight WTT Finals title. Up next for Wang is Alexis Lebrun of France.
"I wasn't in my best form today and had to adjust mid-match. After winning the fifth game, my motivation soared," Wang said. His ability to switch momentum under pressure underscores his status as a top title contender.
Wang Manyu Controls Her Match
On the women's side, defending champion Wang Manyu faced Japan's Miwa Harimoto, ultimately prevailing in six games: 11-6, 11-8, 11-13, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7. The World No.2 will meet the Republic of Korea's Joo Cheonhui in the quarterfinals.
"Facing the same opponent so soon means she knew how to counter my tactics," Wang noted. "I started strong but had to stay focused when she upped her game."
Mixed Doubles Heat Up
In mixed doubles, the pairing of Lin Shidong and Kuai Man dominated Group 1, defeating the Hong Kong SAR's Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem 11-9, 11-4, 11-4. Their performance sets the tone for a competitive field as the tournament unfolds.
Thursday's quarterfinals promise more edge-of-your-seat action as the world's top paddlers vie for the championship in the iconic Hong Kong venue.
