Sinner Survives in Beijing, Alcaraz Advances in Tokyo

Italy’s Jannik Sinner kept his China Open charge alive in Beijing on the Chinese mainland, outlasting French qualifier Terence Atmane 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 to reach the third round. It was Sinner’s first match since falling in the US Open final and marked his 200th hard-court win since 2020—an elite tally only surpassed by Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in that span.

'It was a very difficult challenge today,' Sinner said. After dropping the second set, he broke early in the decider to seize momentum and closed out a dominant 6-0 finish. 'That first game gave me the confidence I needed. Once I felt the court again, I just went for it.'

Meanwhile in Tokyo, World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz battled through an ankle scare to beat Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 6-4, 6-3 in just under 80 minutes at the Japan Open. After going a break down, the Spaniard rattled off four straight games to capture the opener and never looked back, holding serve cleanly to seal the win.

Next up, Sinner will look to keep his momentum rolling in the round of 16, while Alcaraz gears up for a quarterfinal clash with the USA’s Brandon Nakashima. With both stars firing on all cylinders, tennis fans can expect more fireworks on two continents this weekend.
