IOC Adds Two New Weightlifting Categories for 2028 LA Summer Olympics

At its recent meeting in Milan, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board greenlit two brand-new weightlifting categories—one for men, one for women—for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Despite these additions, the total number of athletes remains capped at 120.

The updated program now features six weight classes for each gender, delivering a balance of strength and opportunity. Athletes will compete over five days, from July 25 to 29, all vying for a share of the 12 gold medals on offer.

According to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the extra categories close the gaps between divisions, promising fairer matchups. By spreading competitors across more classes, the IWF aims to minimize cutting weight extremes and reduce injury risks, making the sport safer at the highest level.

For young athletes and fans around the world, these changes represent fresh chances to shine on the Olympic stage. As weightlifting evolves, it remains a powerful showcase of dedication, technique, and raw power—qualities that resonate across cultures and inspire the next generation of global champions.
