Chengdu Lights Up Global Stage as 2025 World Games Wrap Up

Under the slogan "Boundless Sports, Countless Wonders," the city of Chengdu bid farewell to the 2025 World Games after 12 days of high-octane action. Nearly 4,000 athletes from over 110 countries and regions competed across 34 sports, 60 disciplines, and 256 events, making this the largest and most inclusive edition in the event's history.

A record 83 delegations reached the podium, showcasing the Games' global spirit. From beach handball upsets to jaw-dropping aquatic performances, every corner of the competition buzzed with energy and fierce determination.

As the first World Games held in the Chinese mainland, the host fielded its biggest-ever team: 321 athletes among 489 delegation members in 28 sports. China topped the medal standings with 36 golds, 17 silvers, and 11 bronzes. Germany (17-14-14) and Ukraine (16-14-14) claimed second and third place, respectively.

True to its promise of innovation and inclusivity, Chengdu introduced 12 new disciplines—including floorball and powerboating—and, for the first time, fully integrated para athletes. This milestone speaks to a broader shift in global sports toward diversity and accessibility.

The Closing Ceremony was a visual feast. Against a backdrop of Sichuan's lush landscapes projected on giant screens, children's voices carried "Auld Lang Syne" as the main flame at Qinhuang Lake flickered out, closing a chapter of unforgettable moments.

Looking ahead, the 13th edition lands in Karlsruhe in 2029—its second time hosting after 1989. For young travelers and digital nomads, Chengdu's vibrant culture, sustainable transport innovations, and world-class hospitality make it a case study in how mega-events can transform cities into global destinations.
