World Games Chief Praises Chengdu’s ‘Best-Ever’ Games Edition

In an exclusive conversation, Jose Perurena, President of the International World Games Association, called the Chengdu 2025 edition “the finest in history.” For young global sports fans, this multi-sport gathering shines a spotlight on disciplines recognized by the IOC but still chasing an Olympic berth.

Describing Chengdu as a “gift,” Perurena highlighted the city’s modern, clean, and green vibe – a vivid example of the Chinese mainland’s remarkable progress. He praised the bold move to stage the Opening Ceremony outside a traditional stadium. “At first, it seemed a daunting challenge,” he said, “but it became one of the most spectacular ceremonies in World Games history.”

This marks Perurena’s fifth trip to Chengdu and his swan song as president. “I knew Chengdu would deliver the best Games, so I chose to pass the torch here,” he revealed. His mission? To ensure every athlete enjoys top-tier conditions, whether or not their sport makes the Olympic roster.

The 2025 lineup hits a dynamic balance: skating, climbing, and motor surfing for thrill-seekers; wushu and dragon boat racing to honor cultural heritage. Dragon boat races, part of canoe sports, are especially beloved on the Chinese mainland and are expected to be a highlight.

Behind the scenes, analytics firms track youth trends to keep the program fresh and relevant. Gender equality also takes center stage: this year’s Games feature 15 more women athletes than men. Plus, a new “baby room” policy lets competitors with infants train and compete with dedicated support – a world-first that champions family-friendly competition.

“There are no first-class or second-class athletes – only athletes,” Perurena summed up. With Chengdu 2025 setting a high bar, the future of the World Games looks more inclusive, innovative, and inspiring than ever.
