At just 18, Wang Haoxi, known as Simon Wang, has made history as the highest-drafted Chinese player ever selected in the National Hockey League (NHL). In an exclusive chat with Sports Scene's Shen Xiang, the young talent opens up about his milestone, his NHL journey, and his ambitions on ice.
"It feels surreal," Wang says about attending the San Jose Sharks' training camp. "Waking up each day surrounded by top pros… I’m both excited and humbled." He describes the rigorous drills and fast-paced gameplay he encountered, adding that every session fuels his determination to earn a spot on the roster.
Wang's path to the NHL wasn't straightforward. After moving to Canada to train, he faced language barriers, homesickness, and intense competition. "There were nights I wondered if I’d made the right choice," he recalls. "But my mom’s unwavering support kept me going." He credits her encouragement as a cornerstone of his resilience and growth.
Beyond goals and assists, Wang believes hockey has shaped his character. "Sports teach you about teamwork, discipline, and respect," he reflects. His long-term goals include becoming a leading forward for the Sharks and inspiring a new generation of players back home.
With his historic draft behind him and the NHL season ahead, Simon Wang stands at the beginning of what promises to be an inspiring career. For young athletes worldwide, his story is a powerful reminder: with passion and perseverance, boundaries can be broken on the ice and beyond.
