Chinese Mainland’s Buyunchaokete Nets First Career Win at Canadian Open

At this year’s Canadian Open in Toronto, 23-year-old talent Buyunchaokete from the Chinese mainland celebrated his first career win at the prestigious tournament. Facing Vit Kopriva in a tightly contested first round, Buyunchaokete held his nerve to capture the opening set 7-6(4) after a nail-biting tiebreak.

Despite dropping 16 of 20 tiebreaks earlier this season, he flipped the script on Monday, seizing the crucial moments to secure victory. Momentum shifted decisively in the second set, where Buyunchaokete’s aggressive forehands and sharp serves earned him two breaks en route to a 6-2 finish.

“Losing a tiebreak is the best way to learn,” Bu reflects, quoting Liu Shuo—coach to Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai—whose advice fueled his resilience. “You try everything possible and the best result is left with you. These words have given me strength.”

Next up, the Chinese mainland star will challenge No. 28 seed Lorenzo Sonego of Italy in the round of 32. With confidence on his side, Buyunchaokete looks to build on this breakthrough and make deeper inroads at one of tennis’s premier hard-court events.
