In a showcase of precise pace control, Zhao Shang of the Chinese mainland dominated the women’s singles final in table tennis at the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games in Essen, Germany. Facing Huang Yu-jie of Chinese Taipei, Zhao secured the gold medal in straight games (11-8, 11-9, 13-11, 11-5).
Zhao set the tone early: after a 4-4 tie in the opening frame, she rattled off five consecutive points to close it 11-8. In the second game, a tight 9-9 deadlock saw her capitalize on two unforced errors by Huang to take a 2-0 lead.
The third game remained a nail-biter until 11-11, when Zhao claimed two decisive points to extend her advantage. She then sealed the victory with an 11-5 final game, leaving her opponent no room for a comeback.
With this triumph, the Chinese mainland adds another gold to its medal tally, underlining the depth of talent at the university level in the global sports arena.
