Chinese Diving Duo Secures Second Gold at 2025 World University Games

Berlin, Germany – China celebrated its second gold medal at the 2025 Summer World University Games as diving stars Ou Yangyu and Wang Weiying wowed the crowd in the women’s synchronized three-meter springboard final on Friday.

Leading by 1.2 points after two rounds, the duo faced a setback in the third with a 60.30-point dive. They bounced back to dominate round four, extending their advantage beyond 15 points, and closed with a competition-high 71.10 points in the decisive dive. An American team took silver, while Germany grabbed bronze.

In men’s diving action, China’s Hu Yukang fell just short of gold in the 3m springboard final after scoring 72.15 on his last dive. Germany’s Moritz Wesemann edged out Hu for the top spot. Zhang Wen’ao finished seventh.

On the pool deck, swimmers Ai Yanhan and Liu Shuhan kept China’s momentum alive in the women’s 100-meter freestyle semifinals, finishing fifth and seventh to secure spots in Sunday’s final. The pair helped China to silver in Thursday’s 4×100m freestyle relay.

South Africa’s Pieter Coetze smashed the men’s 100m backstroke record with a stunning 52.18-second swim, while the USA’s Leah Shackley broke the women’s 200m backstroke event record en route to gold.

Fencing highlights saw individual neutral athlete Dmitrii Shvelidze defeat Hungary’s Soma Somody 15–11 for men’s épée gold. Italy’s Aurora Grandis clinched the women’s foil title by the same margin against South Korea’s Mo Byeoli.

As the Universiade races on, China’s athletes remain at the forefront across diving, swimming and beyond, showcasing depth and resilience on sport’s rising global stage.
