In a nod to both experience and rising talent, China has chosen badminton standout Cui Hechen and 3×3 basketball talent Liu Bei as flag bearers for the 2025 International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games opening ceremony. The event kicks off on July 16 in the Rhine-Ruhr region and Berlin, Germany.
Both athletes are making their Universiade debuts: Cui Hechen hails from Hunan Normal University, while Liu Bei represents Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Their selection highlights the depth of student-athlete talent in China’s universities.
"I'm really excited to be the flag bearer of the Chinese delegation because I know it might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Cui. "I believe I will grow stronger through this experience, and I can't wait to connect with college athletes from around the world and make new friends."
Liu echoes the sentiment: "This is my first time competing at the World University Games, and I'm honored to carry our country's flag. I aim to showcase the spirit of Chinese youth and push for gold."
Chinese athletes will take part in 90 events across 14 sports, from July 16 to 27, aiming to secure top honors on one of the biggest stages for university sports.
