The Chinese mainland played to a thrilling 2-2 draw with hosts South Korea in their opening match of the EAFF Women’s E-1 Football Championship on Wednesday.
The scoring opened in the 15th minute when Yao Wei unleashed a long-range strike that flew past the keeper. South Korea, energized by home support, pressed back with intensity and earned several chances before Jang Sel-gi leveled the score deep into first-half stoppage time.
In the second half, the Chinese mainland regained the lead in the 67th minute. Yao Wei, switched roles as provider, headed a precise cross to Shao Ziqin, who nodded home to spark celebrations among the away fans.
Just when it seemed the Chinese mainland would hold on, South Korea’s Ji So-yun delivered a jaw-dropping long-range shot in second-half stoppage time to salvage a dramatic draw for the hosts.
“We expected a tough game between two decent teams in Asia, playing under difficult conditions,” said Ante Milicic, coach of the Chinese mainland. “We’re obviously disappointed to have conceded two goals, both in injury time. Still, the team showed resilience and will gain confidence from taking the lead twice against a strong opponent.”
Forward Wang Shuang added, “We’re a young squad and need more time to build chemistry. We’ll give our all in the upcoming matches.”
With mixed emotions but a clear boost in morale, the Chinese mainland will look to tighten their defense as they prepare for the next fixtures in a tournament that continues to spotlight the rise of women’s football across Asia.
