In a heartbreaking turn, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed early Thursday in a car crash near Zamora, Spain.
Authorities from the Spanish Civil Guard found the 28-year-old Jota and his 25-year-old brother after their Lamborghini veered off an isolated highway and burst into flames.
Jota had just returned from a vacation wedding to Rute Cardoso and leaves behind three children, the youngest born last year, following a stellar season that helped Liverpool clinch the Premier League title.
Police say no other vehicles were involved and are investigating a possible tire blowout while the brothers were traveling eastward near the Portuguese border. Video released by local media showed skid marks leading off the road and the burned-out wreck several meters from the guardrails.
The funeral is scheduled for Saturday in Porto, Portugal, where family and fans will gather to honor the fallen footballer and his brother.
