A New Milestone for Chinese Hockey

On Saturday in Los Angeles, 18-year-old Beijing-born defenseman Wang Haoxi, also known as Simon, was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the second round with the 33rd overall pick at the NHL Draft. This historic selection makes him the highest-drafted Chinese player in NHL history.

From Beijing Rinks to the NHL Spotlight

Standing 1.98 meters tall, Wang began lacing up skates at age four. He helped lead his home city at the Harbin Asian Winter Games to a youth group title, showcasing early promise on the international stage.

Eyes on the Future

After attending the NHL’s rookie training camp in June, Wang shared his hopes: “First of all, I’m very thankful for all the support from China,” he said. “I hope China’s hockey development to be better and better. I hope more Chinese hockey players can be drafted to the NHL and make more histories. I will keep improving myself, and work hard in my trainings, and play on the NHL ice as soon as possible.”

Wang’s journey underscores the growing reach of ice hockey and offers inspiration to young global athletes dreaming of making it on the NHL stage.
