IOC First Female African President Coventry Aims for Youthful Games

Kirsty Coventry made history on Monday as she officially took office as the first female and first African president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In her first interview as IOC boss with China Media Group (CMG), she outlined her vision for the future.

Coventry, 41 and born in the 1980s, succeeded Thomas Bach after his 12-year tenure. Reflecting on their three-month handover period, she called the experience "wonderful," praising Bach's guidance as she transitioned into her new role.

As the first IOC President of her generation, Coventry emphasized the importance of keeping the Olympic movement "youthful and vibrant." She believes this approach will help the Games stay relevant and exciting for young fans and athletes around the world.

Looking ahead, Coventry aims to foster fresh partnerships, embrace innovation, and amplify athlete voices. She also expressed enthusiasm about deepening collaboration with CMG, a leading global sports broadcaster, to bring the Olympic spirit to a broader, digitally savvy audience.

With her historic appointment, Coventry is poised to lead the IOC into a new era — one that celebrates diversity, harnesses technology, and inspires the next generation of Olympic champions.
