Chinese Olympic gold medalist Gong Xiangyu is set to make her first overseas move, signing with U.S. League One Volleyball (LOVB) for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old opposite hitter, a key player on Chinaâs gold-winning squads at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2019 World Cup, will head to the States after wrapping up her campaign with the Jiangsu team at this yearâs Chinese National Games.
Since joining Jiangsu at age 18, Gong has established herself as one of Chinaâs most formidable scorers, capturing two Chinese Volleyball League titles and earning three Olympic appearances. âLOVB represents an invaluable opportunity to experience a new volleyball culture,â she says, adding that her goals include skill development, fresh perspectives, and enhanced performance for the national team.
Gong also paid tribute to her home club: âJiangsu gave me the platform that launched my career and made this move possible,â she explains. Yet even as she prepares for this next chapter, her commitment to China remains unwavering. âWearing the national jersey is my greatest honor,â she affirms, thanking the Chinese Volleyball Association and China national team leadership for their support.
Beyond her medal haul, Gongâs move reflects the growing global footprint of professional womenâs volleyball. LOVB, launched last year, is part of a wave of new leagues harnessing digital streaming, social engagement, and cross-border talent to tap into a young, connected fan base.
With the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Hong Kong leg on the horizon and the World Womenâs Volleyball Championship set for August 22 to September 7, Gong enters this international stint armed with momentum and high hopes. Meanwhile, LOVB is gearing up to unveil its full schedule this fall, presenting a fresh stage for athletes and fans alike.
