Wang Yudong’s Late Spot Kick Secures China’s 1-0 Win Over Bahrain

China wrapped up their FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign with a 1-0 victory over Bahrain in Chongqing, courtesy of a stoppage-time penalty from 18-year-old forward Wang Yudong.

Both teams entered the match already eliminated after losses to Indonesia and Saudi Arabia last week. The first half saw few clear-cut chances as both defenses held firm.

In the second period, China seized control. Young winger Wang Yudong repeatedly threatened down the left flank, and although the Bahrain goalkeeper denied his early efforts, persistence paid off in the 93rd minute. A precise cross from Wang Ziming led to a handball foul in the box, and Wang Yudong coolly converted the penalty for his first international goal.

The win lifts China to nine points from three wins and seven losses, securing fifth place in Group C—three points clear of Bahrain. Despite missing out on the next round, this result offers a morale boost and showcases the rise of a new generation.

As China assess their path forward, Wang Yudong's breakthrough hints at exciting prospects. Young fans and global supporters can look ahead to more talent emerging on the international stage.
