Coco Gauff Claims First French Open Title in Three-Set Epic

On a breezy evening at Roland Garros’s Court Philippe Chatrier, second seed Coco Gauff broke through the clay-court drama to claim her first French Open title, defeating top seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.

The Belarusian surged ahead early, breaking serve twice to lead 4-1, but Gauff quickly decoded the gusty conditions with a perfectly timed drop shot to break back and narrow the gap. As the set reached 6-6, Gauff forced a tiebreak, battling back from 3-0 down to win it 7-5 and steal the opener.

Riding that momentum, the 21-year-old American dominated the second set 6-2, firing 63% of her first serves in and winning 67% of her second-serve points. In the decider, Gauff maintained her composure, sealing a 6-4 final set to become the first American woman to lift the French Open trophy since 2015.

Chasing her second Grand Slam after the 2023 US Open triumph, Gauff’s Roland Garros breakthrough cements her status among tennis’s new generation of champions and highlights the rising impact of young athletes across global sport.
