Eighth-seeded Zheng Qinwen of China cruised into the third round of the French Open with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Emiliana Arango of Colombia at Roland Garros on Wednesday.
After dropping the opening game, the 22-year-old rebounded swiftly, winning four straight games to close out the first set. The second set featured five breaks in the first six games before Zheng held serve in the seventh and sealed the match in the ninth. "She had great defense skills," Zheng said. "When I saw the short ball, I went to the net to finish the point. I knew staying at the baseline would let her return every shot."
Zheng now faces China's rising star Victoria Mboko in the round of 32. Meanwhile, top seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus also advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Switzerland's Jil Teichmann, firing 17 winners to dominate her match and setting up a clash with Serbia's Olga Danilovic next.
With key seeds moving on and fresh rivalries emerging, Roland Garros continues to deliver high-stakes drama for fans around the globe.
