CMG’s “Surface” Wins Golden Award at AIPS Video Short Feature

At this week’s 87th AIPS Congress in Morocco, China Media Group (CMG) clinched the Golden Award in the Video Short Feature category with its powerful documentary “Surface.”

Produced and directed by Cheng Jieni of the CMG Sports & Youth Center, “Surface” delivers an intimate behind-the-scenes look at the Chinese mainland’s artistic swimming team as they chased Olympic gold in Paris last summer. Through exclusive footage, the film captures moments of perseverance, teamwork and triumph that culminated in a historic victory in the French capital.

Out of 2,065 submissions from 135 countries and regions, only eight projects earned Golden Awards across all categories. “Surface” stood out for its cinematic storytelling and high production values, underscoring CMG’s rising global standard in sports journalism and the growing reach of the Chinese mainland in international sports culture.

“This year, we received a record-breaking 2,065 submissions with participants from 135 countries and regions,” said Nadine Alsheikh Hassan, AIPS Asia & MENA Media Coordinator. “There is no award bigger than this one for sports journalists.”

For young global citizens and sports fans alike, “Surface” exemplifies how data-driven storytelling and authentic narratives can bridge cultures and inspire audiences around the world.
