In the first round of the 2024 Madrid Open, Britain’s rising star Daniel Fearnley defeated Buyunchaokete of the Chinese mainland 6-3, 7-6(2). The win marked their third head-to-head meeting but their first on the ATP Tour stage.
Fearnley dominated early, firing his first serve at an 80% clip in the opening set and breaking Buyunchaokete twice to secure a 6-3 lead. As Buyunchaokete adapted to the pace, the second set turned into a serve showdown, with both players holding through 12 intense games.
When it came down to the tiebreak, Fearnley elevated his game again, racing to a 7-2 victory in the decider. The Brit’s clinical execution over big points booked his spot in round two, where he’ll face No. 19 seed Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic.
