Liu Guoliang Resigns as CTTA President; Wang Liqin Takes the Helm

In a significant leadership shift on Wednesday, Liu Guoliang resigned as president of the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA), capping a decorated era in which China dominated the sport at the highest level.

A former singles Grand Slam champion—having won gold at the Olympic Games, World Championships and World Cup—Liu transitioned to chief coach of China’s national team in 2013. Under his guidance, the squad swept four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

First elected CTTA president in 2018 and re-elected in 2023, Liu oversaw an unprecedented run: Chinese players claimed nine of ten Olympic gold medals in table tennis between Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, reinforcing China’s unparalleled edge.

Stepping into the top role is 46-year-old Wang Liqin, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Championships singles winner. After retiring in 2013, Wang served as CTTA vice president from 2018, positioning him as a natural successor.

With Wang at the helm, the CTTA looks to blend deep experience with fresh energy as it prepares for upcoming international competitions. China’s table tennis legacy is in familiar hands as the sport evolves on the world stage.
