Zhao Xintong Sets Up Historic All-China Clash After Beating Jones

Amateur Breakthrough in Sheffield

Zhao Xintong made history at the World Snooker Championships by defeating last year’s finalist Jak Jones 10-4 on Monday. The 28-year-old became the first amateur ever to reach the second round in Sheffield, overcoming the odds to move one step closer to the Crucible trophy.

Road to Redemption

After a 20-month ban for breaching betting regulations, Zhao battled through four qualifying rounds to earn his spot on the main stage. "This match was about regaining confidence," he said. "Every match I play now is very important."

All-China Showdown Behind the Crucible

Zhao will face compatriot Lei Peifan—who stunned the 2024 champion Kyren Wilson—in what promises to be an epic all-China duel starting Friday. Jak Jones was bullish on Zhao’s chances: "If he wins it, I wouldn’t be surprised at all and that would be good for the game."

Chinese Contingent Shines

With Zhao’s win, a record at least four Chinese players advance to the last 16. Fan Zhengyi bowed out 10-6 to Mark Allen, while Mark Williams mounted a thrilling comeback to beat Wu Yize 10-8. Xiao Guodong secured his second Crucible victory by defeating Matt Selt 10-4.

Next Up: Ding Junhui

Meanwhile, 2016 runner-up Ding Junhui leads 6-3 against debutant Zak Surety in the opening round. The winner will take on either 2023 champion Luca Brecel or Ryan Day in the next session.
