Facing off against American Zhang Beiwen, Chen initially struggled, committing several unforced errors and losing the first game 21-15. In the men's doubles category, the Chinese duo of Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang also advanced to the final after a swift victory over the Malaysian pair Arif Abdul Latif and Ye Ruiqing.
