In an exhilarating finale to Group A, the Young Socceroos edged out hosts China 2-1 to secure the top spot in the AFC Under-20 Asian Cup held in Shenzhen.
Both teams opted for several lineup changes, having already confirmed their places in the knockout stages. The match kicked off with Australia taking the lead in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on a mistake by China’s goalkeeper Liu Qiwei. Medin Memeti skillfully nutmegged the goalkeeper, setting the tone for the match.
Only two minutes later, Louis Agosti doubled Australia’s advantage when his shot deflected off Qi Qiancheng, making it 2-0.
China bounced back just before the half-hour mark. Kuai Jiwen volleyed in Xu Junchi's cross, narrowing the scoreline to 2-1.
The second half saw China dominate possession, but substitute Mao Weijie missed a golden opportunity in the 61st minute, heading wide from six yards out.
Despite China’s sustained pressure, the Young Socceroos held firm to maintain their perfect record in the group stage, while China progresses as runners-up.
