Olympic Esports Games Postponed to 2027 in Saudi Arabia

The inaugural Olympic Esports Games, initially slated for 2025, will now take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2027. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the rescheduling on Tuesday, marking a pivotal shift in its strategy to integrate esports into the global sporting landscape.

A partnership between the IOC, Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committees, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) aims to blend competitive gaming with traditional sports frameworks. The EWCF’s expertise will guide game selection and tournament design, creating pathways for athletes worldwide to qualify under standardized global criteria.

IOC President Thomas Bach emphasized the significance of the roadmap, stating, \"This historic milestone will turn the dreams of esports competitors into reality.\" Preparations will kick off this year, led by a committee co-chaired by IOC member Ser Miang Ng and Saudi Arabia’s Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal.

Saudi Arabia, already a hub for events like motorsports and football, highlighted its commitment to fostering innovation in esports. The event aims to boost Riyadh’s profile as a destination for tech-savvy travelers and digital nomads seeking cutting-edge cultural experiences.
