China has secured its place in the semifinals of the World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup Men's Division 2 by defeating Ukraine with a decisive 17-11 victory in Istanbul, Türkiye, on Friday.
Entering the match as group leaders after impressive wins against Great Britain and Portugal, the Chinese team dominated the first three quarters, maintaining comfortable margins of 5-4, 4-2, and 6-1. Standout performances from Chen Zhongxian and Chen Yimin, each netting four goals, were pivotal in establishing China's lead.
Despite a strong final quarter from Ukraine, who managed to score 4-2 in the last period, including four goals from Oktavian Veklyuk—bringing his tournament total to 14—the deficit proved insurmountable. China efficiently converted three of their four penalty opportunities, while Ukraine capitalized on two of theirs.
Looking ahead, China is set to face Germany in the semifinals later on Saturday, aiming to continue their impressive run in the tournament.
