Liverpool Extends Premier League Lead with 2-0 Win Over Manchester City

Liverpool delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, securing a 2-0 victory against Manchester City. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah propelled the Reds to a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League standings, while Manchester City suffers their first four-game losing streak since 2008.

This defeat pushes Pep Guardiola's side down to fifth place, leaving them 11 points behind Liverpool. City’s slump comes despite their impressive midweek UEFA Champions League win over Real Madrid.

Liverpool dominated the match from the outset, showcasing a blend of defensive solidity and aggressive attacking play. The first goal arrived in the 12th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a precise long pass to Salah, whose low shot was expertly converted by Gakpo. Salah added a second with a penalty in the 78th minute after Luis Diaz was fouled in the box, sending the Anfield crowd into euphoria.

\"It's very special and I don't take it for granted. It's always special to score at Anfield and win games,\" Salah remarked, amid rumors about his contract renewal.

Under manager Arne Slot, Liverpool has enjoyed an impressive start, with Slot achieving 18 wins in 20 games. His tactical adjustments have fortified the team’s defense and enhanced midfield control, building on the attacking prowess established by former manager Jürgen Klopp.

With this victory, Liverpool leads the Champions League with a flawless record in Europe and has amassed 34 points after 13 games, nine points clear of Arsenal and Chelsea. Throughout the match, Liverpool maintained relentless pressure, registering 18 shots with seven on target, compared to City's eight shots and two on target.

Manchester City struggled to find their rhythm, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander-Arnold, Gakpo, and Salah all testing City’s goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. The closest chance for City came from Rico Lewis, while Erling Haaland remained largely ineffective.
