This Friday, Sanya in Hainan Province welcomed the vibrant kickoff of China’s 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities. Among the 17 sports representing 56 ethnic groups, one event stood out for its unique blend of tradition and athleticism: the swinging competition.
Rising an impressive 12 meters, the swinging structures are not only a visual spectacle but also a test of strength and skill. Accompanied by a parallel bell rack, athletes compete in two categories based on weight: under 55 kilograms and 55 kilograms and above. The challenge is twofold—achieve the highest swing with the fewest movements, and ring the bells as many times as possible within a 10-minute window.
Exclusively for female athletes, the competition begins from a 1.3-meter-high platform, honoring the roots of this sport in the traditions of the Korean ethnic group in northeast China. Recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, swinging has evolved from a leisure activity for noblewomen to a beloved sport that promotes relaxation and community spirit.
Yang Yudan, coach of the Jilin delegation, shared the fascinating history behind the event. “Swinging allowed women from noble families to glimpse the world beyond their courtyards. Over time, it became a popular recreational activity during farming off-seasons, fostering both physical strength and cultural connection,” she explained.
Since its inception in 1953, the National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities have been a cornerstone of cultural celebration and athletic excellence in China. This year marks the event’s 12th edition, attracting approximately 10,000 athletes who will compete across 139 events and three demonstration sports. The games not only highlight sporting prowess but also celebrate the rich diversity and unity of China’s ethnic communities.
Events like equestrian competitions have already commenced in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, setting a vibrant tone for the festivities to come. As athletes gather in the tropical paradise of Hainan, the National Traditional Games promise a memorable blend of culture, sport, and camaraderie.
